Night Photography Series in Chicago

Night Photography Series is a characteristic style by Dave Jordano, a photographer born in Detroit, US. Jordano suggests in an interview that one should have a solid understanding about the history of photography as it either gives a photographer a path to follow or a reason to challenge herself and direct her to a new path. Furthermore, he noted in the same interview about his influence regarding his work: “I’ve been a long time documentarian so my influences lie on the side of photographers who have upheld the belief that photography is a window to the world and less of a conceptual or abstract concept“.

Night photography has become more and more intrinsic with his work. “I’m continuing to expand my night photography beyond Detroit and have produced a new body of work in Chicago, and I’m also traveling south into the rural parts of Illinois again to add to my earlier Prairieland Project.” he suggested. “I find the night photography to be challenging not only from a technical aspect but creatively as well“.

There is resemblance with the series Outdoor Basketball Courts by Bell Austin. Both depict areas of the city and both have a distinct theme. However, the main difference is the night photography.

Dave Jordano was originally from Detroit, however he currently lives and works in Chicago. “I love Chicago and I love Detroit, but one is my hometown and the other I moved to for career reasons.” he explains. “They both may share a common geographic location, but the truth is the two cities couldn’t be farther apart in terms of ideology. Detroit became this autocratic machine driven by the automotive industry and everything revolving around it.“.

Jordano has several awards including the Houston Center for Photography’s Long Term Fellowship Project in 2003 and the Curator’s Choice Award the year after. Hiss main areas of interest are Detroit and Chicago. “I’m continuing to expand my night photography beyond Detroit and have produced a new body of work in Chicago, and I’m also traveling south into the rural parts of Illinois again to add to my earlier Prairieland Project.” he explained.
