Transparent Painting Techniques
James Ulmer is an American artist who currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. His main themes are simple lines, flat colours, and a playful approach to composition. However, colour is prominent. He uses transparent painting techniques to convey his work. Furthermore, drawing inspiration from folk art, cartoons, and outsider art traditions is present form his drawings.
Minimalism is displayed throughout Ulmer’s work. Figures, animals, and everyday objects are depicted in his drawings, including swimming pool paintings. “I have always been interested in drawing figures but most of the time, my drawings are not based on real people or real references.” he explains in a a recent interview. “There is a lot of variation between each character so it keeps me interested in the drawing and keeps it fun.“.

James Ulmer has studied at the University of the Arts at Philadelphia, holding a degree in Illustration and Design. He currently lives and works in New York. Colour and abstraction are the two main ingredients of his work, using non-traditional mediums. “I might have an idea of what I want to do but most of my drawings are done free hand with some parts of the composition measured out.” Ulmer explains. Work has been exhibited in both Europe and US including art galleries at Copenhagen, Stockholm, Los Angeles and New York. The result is impressive. Enjoy.
