Hand Painted Wood Birds

Lisa Larson was a Swedish ceramicist and designer. A series of Hand Painted Wood Birds, Birds 1967, was initially constructed in the sixties by Larson reflecting the considerations of that era. As Larson traveled with her parents in the West Coast, she depicted these wonderful birds in relation to what she saw. Ceramics from Mexico and folk art in general was predominant at that time; Larson created this series, Birds 1967, having bold colours and strong patterns at her time on Gustavsberg. These birds are like an analogue tape, everything was hand-crafted.

Lisa Larson was born in 1931, at Älmhult, Sweden. Art was eminent in her house, and this can be deduced by her work. “There was an abundance of art in my childhood home, and I grew up with dreams of becoming an artist.“, she had expressed some time ago in an interview.

By the end of her studies at College of Crafts and Design in Gothenburg, she participated in a Scandinavian art competition. One of the juries (Stig Lindberg) offered her a one-year trial at Gustavsberg’s porcelain factory. She stayed 26 years! “I was skeptical about working commercially, but because I could work on my own projects at the same time, I still said yes. Gunnar and I would stay 26 whole years in Gustavsberg“. During this period she had the flexibility to work on her own within Gustavsberg.

At some point she left the factory and became freelance “It was a great feeling to be so much in demand, and now a very exciting time for me started. It was completely different from the time spent at Gustavsberg.” she had explained.

Currently, these Hand Painted Wood Birds are availlable from Design House Stockholm. The result is impressive. Enjoy.
