Unique Collages by Lee McKenna
Unique Collages
Lee McKenna, a Melbourne based artist, creates some unique collages through old, used, discarded and damaged paper. However, the main ingredient is the paper itself. “My collage work is very much informed by the source material itself. I use old and aged papers of all kinds” Lee explains in a recent interview. “The method is direct old-fashioned, cut and paste“.
Like Mercedes Helnwein, McKenna referred to a lots of forms of art such as art making—painting, print making, mixed media. Nonetheless, Lee is the most well known for the creation of these wonderful, unique collages. “My collage technique is simple and old-fashioned: I cut stuff up and glue it down“.
Lee McKenna
Originally from New Zeeland, Lee McKenna currently lives and works in Melbourne, Australia. After working as a primary school teacher she moved on to become a graphic designer. “I then studied graphic design and freelanced as a graphic designer before moving our whole family between New Zealand and Australia multiple times for my husband’s work.” she suggests.
Unique collages became part of her work later on her career. “During our first move to Australia, I started to paint again (something I’d pursued during my teacher training), but after relocating multiple times, it became easier to work smaller, eventually making paper the key focus“. In this article her overall work is presented. The result is impressive. Enjοy.
