6 Tips to Create a Quiet Space in Your Home

Your home should be a place of peace and tranquillity. If it is noisy, however, it might not feel like that, and you may struggle to get the kind of relaxation that you really would like.

It doesn’t have to be that way! There are so many things you can do to create a quiet space in your home, and below are some quick tips to help you do just that.

1. Locate the quietest space

If you want to create a quiet space in your home, it’s a good idea to start with an area that is already less noisy than the rest of the house. This could be a nook in the kitchen, a spare room at the back of the house or even a garden room. If you don’t have a quiet-ish space in your home, and you have some money to spend, getting the builders in to create an extension space that is somewhat detached from the rest of the home is ideal, too.

2. Hang fabrics

Once you have identified your ideal space, then you will want to do whatever you can to make minimise the impact of soundwaves against the walls where they can echo and be amplified and prevent you from getting any peace at all.

A really good way to do this is to hang thick fabrics like tapestries and quilts on the walls where they will muffle any sounds and enable you to relax.

3. Install rugs and carpets

Of course, soundwaves can echo off hard floor surfaces too, so if you have floors that are not carpeted, then putting down big thick rugs or laying carpets will help to prevent sound pollution from causing too much of a nuisance in your quiet space, too.

4. Position furniture around the edges of the room

Positioning your soft furnishings, like couches, easy chairs and cushions, around the edges of the room will prevent a barrier that will stop sounds from travelling right into the space where they can ruin your relaxation, and the more soft furnishings and fabrics you have in the room, the better the effect will be. In addition, by using antique furniture restoration can help for the feel and look of the re-arranged room.

5. Seal the cracks

If you have cracks in your quiet space, then noise will naturally filter through them. So, buy a draught excluder for that gap at the bottom of the door, use caulking to seal window joins that are not as good as they uses to be and basically do whatever you can to make the room as airtight as possible without sealing up any necessary ventilation, of course.

6. Get a sign

Last but not least, keep noisy family members out of your quiet space when you want to relax by hanging a Do Not Disturb sign at the entrance. It won’t work all the time, but it’s worth a try!

As you can see, there are lots of things you can do to create a quiet space in your home, no matter what you have to work with. So, what are you waiting for?
