Song 100: Grace Jones – La Vie En Rose
La Vie en rose was one of the songs which had immesnse impact. Written in 1945 for Édith Piaf, was popularized a year later, and became very popular worldwide in the early fifties. As has been noted, at that time more than seven versions of the song was in the Billboard charts, including the ones from Dean Martin and Louis Armstrong.
Grace Jones covered La Vie en rose in 1977 for her debut studio album Portfolio. Jones, being legendary supermodel, disco queen, and prolific actress, made the song an immediate success. Furthermore, Jones’ fairly radical bossa nova interpretation of Édith Piaf’s signature tune became her first international hit single and a staple of her repertoire. The result is impressive. Enjoy.
