Richard Colman, originally from Bethesda, Maryland he currently lives and works in San Francisco, California having a degree from School of The Museum Of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts. His work has been exhibited throughout US but also in several cities in Europe (Paris, London, Copenhagen) and Osaka, a long journey that started just before his graduation in 2001.

Colman paints like an illustrator. Vibrant colours, female forms, balance. Although he has said “Color is not something I am very comfortable with, I am not a natural colorist“, he expresses a lot of his thinking through colour. “for me is just the challenge, but I also like the idea of making thematically dark paintings using very bright colors“. This is evident.

A new exhibition with Colman’s work will take place from the 25th of September until the 6th of November at Chandran Gallery. In this exhibition colour is in prominent position. “Some start with a sketch, some maybe with just a few lines or a general concept, but that one was figured out ‘color first.’ I started with this idea: I want to make a blue painting and align that orange color with it.” he explained in an interview at Juxtapoz. Enjoy.
