Portraits by Mathieu Laca
Mathieu Laca is from Quebec, Cananda having a bachelors degree from Concordia University in Fine Arts in 2005. Much younger, and before he completed his degree, he had professionally exhibited his work at Maison des Arts de Laval, a venue for many forms of performing arts in his home city. He was awarded the City of Laval Culture Prize in 2002, again before his graduation. Laca currently exhibits his work throughout Canda and additionally it is part of private collections across US, Canada and Europe.
His main medium is oil and his main theme is human faces. As he explains he is “[…] looking for the rupture of identity of the human face. To find the most extreme point of tension between represented reality and the conditions of representation“.
Yet when he finishes his work, his portrait, he ‘destroys’ his own work. “I usually start to paint with an idea in mind. But this idea, even if it’s good and well executed, often seems dull. It lacks energy. So, I destroy it. I scrape, I erase, I cover up with the background color, I add in thick impastos of various colors with the knife and I move them around almost randomly“. Enjoy.
