18th Century ‘Casa na Rua de São Mamede ao Caldas’ Restoration, Lisbon, Portugal
The mastermind behind this effort is Manuel Aires Mateus. A Portuguese architect is based in Lisbon though has travelled around the world. He has an architectural degree from Faculdade de Arquitectura UT Lisboa and has teached throughout the world most recently at Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.
The house was neglected for some time so the architect needed to fully restore it and at the same time to preserve the elegance it once had. To do so, he picked the interior elements as simple as it could be in order to sustain the historic character of the building.
Moreover he needed to extend the existing house to the outdoor space. “The garden made it possible to enhance the depth of the view” the architect explains. This is evident through the smooth transition from indoors to outdoors. The result is impressive. Enjoy.
