Song 70: Pet Shop Boys – Rent

Pet Shop Boys is one of the best pop groups, having sold more than 50 million records worldwide; it is also one of my best groups. The song Rent identifies not only the insecurities the current society creates within intimate relationships, but also the result of them which are numbness and insensibility. The song also identifies the survival aspect in the society and the compromises one needs to make in order to be with accordance with a certain lifestyle. The lyrics are exceptional, leaving no much space for argument.

I never want anything, it’s easy
you buy whatever I need
But look at my hopes, look at my dreams
the currency we’ve spent
I love you, you pay my rent
