Eric Fischl is an American painter and sculptor. He was born in 1948 in New York City and grew up in the suburbs of Long Island. He attended Phoenix College and has a degree in Fine Arts from the California Institute of Arts in 1972. Furthermore, he went for some years to Halifax, Nova Scotia to teach painting having there his first solo exhibition at Dalhousie Art Gallery. At Halifax he also met with April Gornik, also a painter, that they got married. He currently lives and works in Sag Harbor, NY with his wife. Fischl is a Fellow at both the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Science.
Fischl opposed the trend of the late twentieth century which, as far as the art was concerned, was more abstract and minimalistic. His main style is figurative painting, and he paints wonderfully. His work is exhibited in renowned museums throughout the world. He has been featured in over one thousand publications. By browsing his site I saw the following: “His extraordinary achievements throughout his career have made him one of the most influential figurative painters of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.” and I fully agree.
His style resembles Jack Vettriano, both figurative painters. In my interpretation Vettriano is more illustrative, Fischl is more raw, but both are vast in what they do. In this article Fischl’s overall painting career is presented. Enjoy.
