Song 72: Johann Strauss II – The Blue Danube Waltz
Johann Strauss II, the son of Johann Strauss Sr. was a prolific composer from Austria, particularly in light music. As just as his father, he composed waltzes, polkas and quadrilles -composed more than 500 – and became ‘The Waltz King’ in Vienna giving this music popularity to wide audiences.
The Waltzes ‘Kaiser-Walzer‘, ‘Tales from the Vienna Woods‘, or the ‘Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka‘ are very well known until today, though the ‘The Blue Danube Waltz‘, ‘has made it an unofficial Austrian national anthem‘ as wikipedia suggests. ‘The waltz is traditionally broadcast by all public-law television and radio stations exactly at midnight on New Year’s Eve, and on New Year’s Day it is a customary encore piece at the annual Vienna New Year’s Concert.‘
It was not until I watched the movie ‘2001: Space Odyssey‘, a movie by Stanley Kubrick, that I realised the significance of this song. The song had its lion’s share in the soundtrack appearing twice. The tune is very familiar but it is hard to identify if there is nothing to trigger the mind. Enjoy.
